TOPIC: Classes at neighboring universities

GWU has a tuition-sharing agreement with U of Maryland (College Park), Georgetown, George Mason, American and others.  I took an excellent communications theory class at Georgetown, and would recommend just experiencing another institution for anyone who's considering it and can find a suitable class.  Among the other benefits, the professors I met through that are very enthusiastic for possibly serving on my dissertation committee.  The arrangements and "paperwork" weren't too bad, just get started early.  Other thoughts or any questions?  --TSC

TOPIC: Ideas for program improvements that DocStus would like the next Assoc. Dean and the Doc. Cmte. to consider

* More funding, for fellowships that better reflect the cost of living in our area

* Regular annual increases in the fellowship, at least to keep up with inflation

* Funding support for conferences, to bolster what departments have available

* Hightened efforts by faculty to recruit the best prospective students available

* Institutional incentives for tenured professors to work with doctoral students, on research, committees, whatever

* Improvements in the qualifying exam, to make it more integrative and educational rather than just repeated final exams

* What else?

*
